Endocrine Surgery.

At Savannah Surgical Oncology, E. Stephen Yeager, MD and Jeffrey S. Mandel, MD are experienced in thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and pancreatic disorders. Dr. Yeager received specialized training in endocrine surgery during his residency at the renowned Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Furthermore, Dr. Yeager is the only surgeon in the region, and one of only four surgeons in Georgia, to be a member of the distinguished American Association of Endocrine Surgeons. Dr. Yeager and Dr. Mandel have collectively performed hundreds of endocrine surgeries.

Thyroid surgery.

There are numerous conditions of the thyroid for which surgery is indicated. These include hyperfunction, goiters, suspicious nodules and cancer. Dr. Yeager and Dr. Mandel utilize the latest traditional and minimally invasive surgical methods and will recommend the best approach based on the patient’s individual condition.

Parathyroid glands.

There are four small parathyroid glands that lie right under the thyroid gland, two on each side of the neck. Sometimes one or more of the parathyroid glands enlarge and produce excessive parathyroid hormone. This overproduction of hormone, called “primary hyperparathyroidism,” causes high levels of calcium in the bloodstream, which may result in kidney stones and wasting of the bones. Treatment of this condition involves a surgical procedure to explore the neck and remove the abnormal glands, leaving the normal glands behind. Because the procedure is complex, it is important that it be performed by a surgeon with extensive parathyroid experience, such as Dr. Yeager and Dr. Mandel.

Adrenalectomy.

The two adrenal glands are located on top of each kidney. Generally, patients are referred for an adrenalectomy after an abdominal medical imaging study reveals an enlarged adrenal gland. At Savannah Surgical Oncology, Dr. Yeager and Dr. Mandel can perform adrenalectomy with either conventional or minimally invasive surgery, depending on the patient’s unique condition.

Pancreatic diseases.

As an endocrine gland, the pancreas produces and releases the hormones insulin and glucagon into the bloodstream. There are many types of tumors that can develop in the pancreas and affect its functions. Dr. Yeager and Mandel can accurately assess your condition and recommend the appropriate surgical approach. Pancreatitis is an inflammation of the pancreas that may be acute or chronic. For patients whose pancreatitis is the result of gallbladder disease or an obstructed pancreatic duct, traditional or minimally invasive surgery may be necessary.
